Consider Chiropractic Care to Help Avoid Opioid Use

Dr. Philip A. Facquet III is Chiropractor from Smithtown, NY

Most of you have heard about the opioid crisis in America. This class of drugs includes prescription pain medications including codeine, fentanyl, hydrocodone, oxycodone, and others. Heroin is also an opioid. Did you know that chiropractic care offers a natural, effective, evidence-based, approach to pain relief?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have stated that in 2015 there were over 30,000 deaths from opioids. According to the CDC director, “The epidemic of deaths involving opioids continues to worsen. Prescription opioid misuse and use of heroin and illicitly manufactured fentanyl are intertwined and deeply troubled problems.” The American Society of Addiction Medicine estimates that 23 percent of heroin users develop opioid addictions. Of the 21.5 million Americans with a substance abuse addiction in 2014 almost 2 million involved prescription pain medications and about 600 thousand more had a heroin problem. Think of the fact that there are over 126 million Americans suffering from a chronic musculoskeletal disorder like yours. The chance of addiction is high.

The reason for potential abuse is because of your brain and spinal cord, the nervous system, have opioid receptors in their nerve cells. When stimulated they yield pleasurable effects and they also relieve pain. Addiction involves continued use, repeating behaviors for this reward, in spite of negative consequences. This is a primary brain disease that is chronic and subject to frequent relapses where a person seeks this reward or relief over and over again. You have seen the news or maybe you know someone that is suffering from an addiction. Do you want to even be exposed to these types of medications? Why put your children at risk when there are better ways, proven ways, to help you or your family recover? If you are on these drugs chiropractic care offers you a chance to achieve a better wellness based lifestyle while you reduce your dependence on opioids.

With that being said, for the overwhelming number of Americans suffering from chronic spinal pain or acute joint pains chiropractic offers a chance to receive conservative, cost effective care that avoids unnecessary exposure to this class of drugs in the quest to get better. Isn’t that the point? You want to get better or you want to help your child get better as quickly as possible. Why would you expose them to addictive medications or more risky procedures? The chiropractic profession is the most regulated and best recognized of the other alternatives to allopathic, traditional, medicine. Our patients report very high satisfaction rates of their experiences in our offices. The sheer number of people seeking the care of the chiropractor has tripled in the past twenty years should tell you something.

Remember 80 percent of us will experience back pain in our lives. The opioid prescriptions have exploded from 112 million, in 1992, to almost 250 million, in 2015. From 1999 to 2014 there were more than 165,000 people that died from prescription opioid overdoses in our country. Died. That is sad. Understand that you can avoid this drug in many cases. Your chiropractic can deliver first line treatment to avoid the need for drug pain management.
